"You don't have to swing for the fences in everything you do. Cruise control can be an effective, low-stress way not only to run your fastest but to reach your full potential in many areas of life."
-Meb Keflezighi, 26 Marathons
I hope you all are enjoying your summer running! In Atlanta, it's hot and humid, but the team is still getting in great runs in the beautiful summer weather.
If you're looking for a summer read to accompany your running, I just finished 26 Marathons by Meb Keflezighi. Meb takes his experiences from the 26 marathons of his career and translates them into lessons about faith, identity, and, of course, running. There are plenty of great nuggets in this book, including:
- "You don't have to swing for the fences in everything you do. Cruise control can be an effective, low-stress way not only to run your fastest but to reach your full potential in many areas of life."
- "Marathon is a metaphor for life in how it rewards patience."
- "Set long-term goals and never let go of those dreams."
- “Base what you do on race day in reality, not fantasy.”
Each chapter in the book is one of Meb's 26 marathons. As you read, you are progressing and maturing with Meb through his marathon career. It's hard to beat the chapters where Meb wins a Silver Medal at the Olympics, wins the NYC Marathon, or wins the 2014 Boston Marathon after the previous year's bombing. But it is also equally hard to beat the chapters where Meb has horrible races --- GI issues, injuries, mental struggles. For perhaps many of you and me, these chapters are far more relatable.
As always, best wishes to everyone chasing your running goals!
