Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all had a great day with family, food, and maybe a little running.
In our house, Thanksgiving usually means the start of holiday movies. One of our favorites is Home Alone. We’ve watched it so many times I’ve lost count. But there’s a funny thing about movies you revisit — they slip something new to you every time.
This year, I noticed the colors. Someone once told me that almost everything in the McCallister house is red or green. Wallpaper. Lamps. Tablecloths. Mats. Plates. Napkins. Paint. Even the clothes. I thought it sounded far-fetched, but sure enough, it’s everywhere once you start looking. It made the movie feel different, even though I already knew every line.
Most days I run the same six-mile loop. I bet you might have a similar route too. Same sidewalks, same turns, same hills. I’ve covered that route thousands of times. But every now and then something catches my attention — a house being renovated, a neighbor with a new dog, a tree starting to change color. Even on the most familiar path, the world doesn’t sit still.
Races, too. I ran the Thanksgiving Half Marathon again this year. Same course. Same holiday tradition. Yet it’s always different — the weather, the crowds, the pace I settle into. Even when nothing changes, something always does.
It’s like rewatching a favorite film. The story stays the same. But you don’t — and that’s what keeps it interesting.
Best wishes on chasing your running goals,
George
